What is Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism is an increasingly well known disorder, first identified in 1943. People are more aware of the condition now, partly due to recent news coverage following links with the Measles mumps rubella jabs. However, few realise just how complex Autism, Aspergers & autistic spectrum disorders can be.
Although diagnosis of an ASD is dependant upon three distinct areas (the triad of impairment) each individual may display symptomatic behaviours to varying degrees, & many have additional mental health issues, learning disabilities or physical health issues such as epilepsy or sensory disabilities.
The need for individually tailored services that could address a variety of complex needs was identified by the founding directors of Modus Care, away from the often ‘institutional' setting generally adopted.
